A plane has crashed into a barn just metres away from an apartment building in New Hampshire, killing everyone onboard and sending 40ft flames into the air.

The aircraft, believed to be a single-engine plane, went down not far from Keene Dillant-Hopkins Airport.

40ft flames were seen erupting into the air after the tragic crash on Friday night, with nearby locals reporting that their homes shook as a result of the impact.

The City of Keene confirmed in a statement that all on board the aircraft died in the crash. It is not clear at this stage how many people were on the aircraft.

"There was a plane crash near the Keene Airport into a multifamily building near Hope Chapel," the statement read.

"There were no injuries at the multifamily building. Unfortunately those on the plane have perished. The FAA has been notified.

"Additional details will be shared as they become available."

Flames ripped through the two-storey barn as fire crews, police officers and ambulance medics rushed to the scene. No one inside the apartment suffered injuries.

"It was very scary, I mean, I was sitting in the chair and I heard the big bang and then the house shaking," said Robin Guimond, speaking to WCVB, as per the Daily Mail.

Scott Gauthier added: "I just grabbed what I needed to grab to be decent, got outside and looked up.

"The roof was already in. It already spread all over the roof of the back of the house."

Residents explained the plane crashed into a storage barn area, which caught fire next to a small apartment building that shares a parking lot with Hope Chapel.

Pictures taken in the hours afterwards show fire ripping through the building, with fire crews working hard to extinguish the flames.

Parts of the building have been totally destroyed by the crash

Witness Angel Brown was in her living room when the plane crashed into the barn.

She said: "I heard the plane and then I heard a crash then sirens went into my kitchen to get stuff ready for work and saw the flames from my back window."

Wayne Brown, the building's landlord, added: "It looks like the tree in the back you can see where the limbs broke off.

"They must have been having problems because the runway is probably a half a mile behind from the house.

"They probably hit the limb and it turned the plane on a 90 and it just drove it right into the barn."

The Swanzey Police Department said in a statement: "Please stay clear of lower Main St in Keene. First responders are on scene of a plane crash with building fire."

American Red Cross of Northern New England confirmed that six members of staff were at the scene offering their assistance.
