MICK McCARTHY wants to land "a Dennis Bergkamp" to help keep Sunderland in the Premiership next season.

The Black Cats will parade the Championship trophy in front of a sell-out Stadium of Light crowd today.

But McCarthy has already started planning for the top flight and hopes to unveil a megastar in time for the campaign.

"I've seen Charlton are after Dennis Bergkamp and what a coup that would be," he told The SP.

"On the other side of the coin, I don't want to upset the applecart with my players with someone on a vast amount of wages who doesn't want to play.

"But if you're talking about someone who has the effect of a Franco Zola, who comes and does a really good job and is professional and brings other players on, then, absolutely, I would sign one.

"Experience is okay if it's the right experience. You see Paul Ince and he might not be everyone's cup of tea, but the way he goes about his business, he's not just taking the money.

"Dennis Irwin did it at Wolves for a couple of seasons and Teddy Sheringham has done it at West Ham this year. You have to be selective in those."
