DEAN HOWELL'S penalty earned victory for improving Halifax and kept them in touch with the pace-setters.
Both sides had scored within the first three minutes of the second half, but after Martin Rice had fouled Ryan Sugden, Howell slotted his spot-kick into the bottom right corner of the net 18 minutes from time.
Only one minute of the second period had elapsed when Halifax went ahead. Darren Mansaram, whose loan spell from Grimsby has just been extended, converted a pass from Howell.
But, straight from the kick-off, Exeter won a corner which was not properly cleared and Chris Todd lashed home a fine shot from just outside the penalty area.
