DUTCH goalkeeper Bart Griemink saved a last-minute penalty as Southend earned three valuable away points at Bury.
The inspired Griemink guessed the right way and pushed aside Danny Swailes' spot-kick after referee Trevor Parkes adjudged Adam Barrett to have handballed.
The official had awarded the visitors a controversial penalty of their own in the first-half as Wayne Gray fired home beyond Bury shot-stopper Andy Marriott.
Griemink kept Southend in front at half-time with a diving stop from Chris Porter.
The Shrimpers should have saved themselves any late worries at the start of the second-half when, following good work by Gray, leading scorer Fredy Eastwood missed the target when it appeared easier to score.
