The twin-engine aircraft made an Emergency landing, trying to reach Waterford Airport in Ireland before falling short and plunging into a field with four people understood to have been on board

One person has died after a light aircraft crashed in Ireland.
It is understood that the pilot was the only person on board the plane when it crashed into a field close to Waterford Airport, Ireland, with witnesses reporting that it had been losing height rapidly just before 1pm this afternoon. The aircraft appears to have been severely damaged.
The pilot declared an emergency around 100 miles off the south east coast on a flightpath that would have taken him towards the west coast of France and then on to the Mediterranean coast. The plane turned back and started descending - trying to make the airport at Waterford and the relatively long runway there.
The aircraft, belived to be a Vulcanair and en route to Beziers in France, didn't make it, and began to lose height rapidly as it crossed back over the coast. It came down in a field. An air accident investigation has been launched by the Department of Transport following today's incident. It will be handled by the Department's Air Accident Investigation Unit with support from the Irish Aviation Authority.
