Sergey Karaganov, head of Russia’s Council for Foreign and Defense Policy, has threatened to 'finish' the UK and Europe with nuclear weapons
Russia has directly threatened to unleash nuclear weapons on the UK and mainland Europe.
Sergey Karaganov, head of Russia’s Council for Foreign and Defense Policy, said that if Russia is defeated in Ukraine, Vladimir Putin "would use nuclear weapons and Europe would be finished physically".
He also criticised his own government for being "too patient" with Europe. Speaking to right wing American commentator Tucker Carlson, he added: “I am criticising my government of being too prudent and too patient with them... But sooner or later, if they continue to support this war, sacrificing numerous of the Ukrainians and others... We’ll have to punish them severely.”
Karaganov described the prospect of a Russian defeat as a "fantastic illusion" and said there was an "intellectual incapacity" across European leadership.

Getty Images)“Everybody in the world now laughs at Europe, which used to be, by the way, one of the core centers of world power," he said. "Now it’s a joke. And of course, I am not speaking of all Europe. We know that there are decent Europeans. There are smart Europeans.”
Karagnov claimed European leaders were “unable to understand what is happening fully” as the continent has been “intellectually degrading” since 1968.
“They believe that war will never come to their territory. They forgot about the war and that it’s terrible,” he said. “Now, one of the tasks of Russia in addition to all others is to bring them to senses hopefully without using nuclear weapons.”
The comments come as global tensions continue to rise. The UK has sent a military officer to Greenland as Denmark steps up its military presence in the Arctic and High North, amid repeated calls by Donald Trump for the US to assume control of the territory.

Downing Street confirmed one UK military officer had been deployed at Denmark’s request to join a reconnaissance group ahead of a planned Arctic Endurance exercise.
“We share President Trump’s concern about the security of the High North. And you see this as part of Nato and JEF nations stepping up to reinforce security in the High North,” a spokesperson said. “Stepping up with stronger exercising, to deter the Russian aggression and the Chinese activity.”
Germany, Sweden, Norway, and France confirmed they would send personnel to the joint mission, which aims to map out further cooperation to bolster regional security and “strengthen our ability to operate in the area,” Denmark’s Ministry of Defence said in a statement.
Renewed security concerns come amid fresh pressure from Mr Trump, who has long insisted that the US must take over Greenland to prevent Russia or China from gaining control of the territory.
His administration has even threatened to use force to annex Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Nato ally Denmark, prompting concern about the future of the transatlantic alliance.
