Police officers and paramedics rushed to the scene following reports that a male pedestrian had been hit by a car in the early hours of Thursday morning, with motorists told to avoid the area

A main road in the UK has been shut for a number of hours after a male pedestrian was ploughed into by a car.
Emergency services responded to the incident in Southport at 5:30am on Wednesday. Marine Drive is currently closed and motorists have been urged to avoid the area.
Merseyside Police officers are in attendance. The male's condition is not yet known at this time.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson told the Liverpool Echo:
We can confirm emergency services are currently in Southport following a serious collision this morning (Wednesday 24 December).
At around 5.30am, we received a report that a collision had occurred on Marine Drive, near its junction with Hesketh Road, involving a car and a male pedestrian.
A road closure is currently in place at the scene and motorists are advised to avoid the route while emergency services deal with the incident.
