Storm Goretti has been wreaking havoc across the UK, with the Met Office issued a rare red warning for wind in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly on the evening of January 8, cautioning residents of "dangerous, stormy" gales reaching up to 100mph as Brits were alerted to the immediate risk to life from flying debris.

Wind speeds of 99mph have been clocked on the Isles of Scilly, while The National Coastwatch Institution reported a staggering 123mph at Stepper Point, Padstow. Cornwall Council advised locals against travelling on the morning of January 9 due to Storm Goretti, stating: "A large number of roads are still closed due to fallen trees, downed power lines and debris.

"Our teams are working around the clock to clear them, and we ask that you give crews the space they need to carry out urgent repairs safely."

One resident of Cornwall, left without power due to the storm, has shared their experience of being caught in the midst of it.

Social media influencer Perrin Hooper, 24, who has a following of 396,000 on the app, filmed themselves saying: "The storm last night was wild.

"I hope everyone's okay... any of my fellow Cornwall people."

Sharing the video at 7:50am on Friday, Perrin revealed: "I've got no power, we've got no power and there are trees down everywhere.

"There were 123mph winds somewhere near us, I believe. But I must say, they've done a very good job of getting the power back up pretty quickly for most areas. So well done."

Perrin went on to say they had 'never seen anything like it' when describing the ferocious weather that battered the region overnight. "I am sure it's happened before, but wow," they said.

The social media star also confessed to venturing onto their enclosed balcony to briefly experience the tempest, despite knowing they 'probably shouldn't have'.

"I did go and stand out in it for like a minute, just to see what it felt like" they said. "I was safe, don't worry.

"But then I went back in because I thought it was probably a really bad idea to be out [in it], also I was really worried my door was going to be ripped off."

One viewer responded to the footage: "it was crazy! Lucky we've got power."

Another person wrote: "Felt like my roof was about to blow off."

A third replied: "I am here too, glad you're safe."

Over 25 schools across Cornwall remain shut today following the storm, with numerous institutions reporting power cuts or blocked access due to fallen trees littering nearby roads. At least 80 other schools are opening their doors late.
