Nurses fled in terror after a man allegedly went on the rampage in a St Helens hospital. It is claimed he had been declined an appointment when he allegedly erupted.

  • Police and paramedics flooded into Newton Community Hospital in St Helens on Tuesday after a man allegedly went on a 'rampage' with a 'crow bar,' leaving NHS staff injured, hiding and fleeing in terror.
  • The attacker was believed to have requested an appointment at the hospital but became "increasingly agitated" when this was declined. He was asked to leave but allegedly damaged a counter instead before striking people, police said.
  • One nurse told how she feared for her life and said she was 'beaten nearly to death' after she was hit over the head from behind as she tried to get a drink from a vending machine. She fled in terror but is now home 'safe' with her family.
  • Merseyside Police said all the victims were treated in hospitals and walk-in centres for injuries including head lacerations, bruising and injuries to their hands and arms. They were all reported to be in a stable condition.
  • The weapon used in the attack was being forensically examined and detectives were in the process of reviewing CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses. A mobile police station is on site.
  • The 20-year-old suspect, who police said lived locally and was originally from Afghanistan, was initially arrested at the scene on suspicion of six counts of Section 18 wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, affray and criminal damage. After he was taken to the police station in Merseyside he was detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act. READ THE FULL STORY HERE
