If you’ve ever made a cup of tea while half asleep and thought, “ This kettle is louder than a jet engine,” Russell Hobbs might have just answered your prayers. The brand has launched a brand-new kettle – the Calm Kettle – and it’s designed to do exactly what it says on the tin, plus much more. It’s quiet. It glows. It won’t rattle your eardrums first thing in the morning or wake up a sleeping baby last thing at night.
Yes, it’s £100. Yes, it’s just a kettle. But also… it kind of isn’t. Think of it like a Lumie light, but with the added bonus of being able to boil your water quietly, quickly, and with some other fun functions to soothe stress while you wait for it to do its job. It's basically the quickest spa day you didn't know you could get from your kitchen.
Here’s what the Calm Kettle
- It’s super quiet: No more aggressive bubbling and clanging – just a soft, subtle boil.
- It glows while it works: A warm ambient light comes on as it heats up, giving it major “waking up gently” vibes.
- It plays soothing sounds: Choose from 5 optional soothing sounds that can be played while in demo mode, keep warm mode or during the boil.
- You can choose the temperature: The variable temperature feature lets you pre-set the water temperature to between 40 and 100℃, so you can make a speciality tea without overheating it, or gently heat a baby’s bottle.
- A keep warm function: This keeps your water at a warm temperature for up to 15 minutes until the white light fades
- The pour is smooth: The spout’s designed to avoid drips and splashes – small win, but a big one for clean kitchen counters.
- It’s energy efficient: The rapid boil function is great for single cups and quicker cuppas.

But… is it really worth £100?
If you’re someone who sees your kettle as just another appliance, probably not. But if you’re into small upgrades that make your daily rituals feel a little bit nicer – or you just like your home to look pulled together – then this is the kind of detail that makes a difference. Especially when it’s something you use several times a day. The Calm Kettle definitely leans into the llifestyle' category of home tech. It’s part functional, part feel-good. And while it might not make your tea taste any better, it’ll make the whole process of making it feel a lot more soothing.
If you're also a new parent who is getting a lot of use out of their kettle, the fact you can select the exact temperature you want your water warmed to is an excellent function when heating up bottles. That said, if you love the idea of a quiet, stylish kettle but you’re not quite ready to drop £100 on one, there’s a more affordable option that still delivers on design and hush-factor. For example, Breville Edge's Low Steam Kettle, now £56.99 on Amazon.
What are the reviews for the Calm Kettle?
One Argos shopper pens: "A colour-changing musical kettle? How cool is that? It's so calming and makes waiting for the kettle to boil an absolute joy (not that I do that very often!) and it beeps when it's boiled, which gets you back to the kettle to make the drink, rather than forgetting about it and having to waste time and energy in starting all over again. It has loads of useful features, is aesthetically pleasing, lightweight and well made. The only thing I'm still getting use to is the pouring angle - it's not as ergonomic as my previous Sage kettle. I was going to replace my Sage with another Sage, but this caught my eye and I'm so glad that I chose the Calm Kettle instead."
A second writes: "It’s very quiet when boiling and even comes with “soothing sounds” as an optional extra. It lights up different colours and makes a little sound when it’s finished boiling. My favourite feature is how you can select which temperature you want the water to be boiled to and it shows what the current temperature of the water is before boiling and after, perfect if you fancy a cuppa straight after the other!"
"I love this kettle. It just makes me smile. It has also been great for prepping baby foods that are made up with hot water," says a third.
A fourth, however, offers a slightly less glowing viewpoint: "Nice kettle, goes with my kitchen. On/off button not very responsive though!"
What do you think– a great kitchen addition or not worth £100?
