The DWP has issued a statement over an ongoing review of PIP (Personal Independence Payment). The benefit provides payments to support people who live with a long-term health condition or disability. How much you get depends on to what extent your condition affects you, paying up to Β£187.45 a week, or Β£9,747.40 a year.

The Government previously set out proposals to tighten the qualifying rules for the benefit, making it more difficult to be eligible for the daily living element of the benefit. This currently pays either Β£73.90 a week or Β£110.40 a week, depending on how much your condition impacts your ability to carry out daily tasks.

You may not get any payment if you are not affected enough to qualify for this part of the benefit. There is also a mobility part, also with a lower and higher rate.

As there was widespread opposition from MPs to the plans to change the eligibility rules, the Government said it would not make any changes to the benefit before a review of PIP is completed. The review is looking at to what extent the benefit is suited to the modern world and if its provides adequate support to claimants.

Liberal Democrat MP Ian Sollom asked a written question in Parliament about the review. He asked the DWP when they would provide "more details on the membership of the steering group overseeing the review and planned next steps in the process".

DWP minister Sir Stephen Timms, who is leading the review, provided a response. He pointed to a previous update published in December 2025 with information about the steering group and what the next steps are for the review.

Mr Timms also said in his response: "We will continue to publish updates on gov.uk as the review progresses." The Government has said it will engage with disabled people as it carries out the review.

The previous update cited by Mr Timms explains: "We set out our intention that the majority of steering group members would be disabled people or representatives of Disabled People’s Organisations (DPOs). This is central to our commitment that disabled people will be at the heart of the review throughout its duration and recognises the essential role that DPOs play in amplifying disabled people's voices."
