Storm Goretti is expected to bring chaos across the UK this evening, with the Met Office issuing an urgent call for households in affected areas to prepare themselves. A barrage of heavy snow, rain and strong winds is forecast to sweep through numerous regions, prompting both yellow and amber weather warnings.

β€Œ

Amber alerts for significant snowfall have been declared across the Midlands, Wales, South West England, Yorkshire and Humber between 8pm Thursday and 9am Friday. Meanwhile, Cornwall and the Isle of Scilly face an amber warning for powerful winds from 5pm to 11pm today.

β€Œ

Yellow warnings covering snow and ice remain active for Scotland, Northern Ireland, London, Lincolnshire and the East of England. Forecasters are warning residents to anticipate major disruption to road travel, with vehicles and passengers potentially becoming stranded.

β€Œ

Rail and air services are expected to face delays and cancellations, whilst isolated rural areas could find themselves cut off. There's a strong likelihood of power outages, and mobile phone networks may experience disruption.

In light of these severe weather alerts, the Met Office is advising households to stock up on seven crucial items before Storm Goretti arrives, reports the Express.

β€Œ

They cautioned: "You could be without food, heat or light if you are cut off by snow and can't access services and amenities for a number of days. Act now and be prepared, by getting the essentials together that you could need."

Seven essential items to have prepared

  • Torches and batteries
  • Candles and matches or lighters
  • Plenty of blankets and warm clothing
  • Food

If you find yourself stranded due to the storm, the Met Office has provided straightforward guidelines to ensure your safety. They advise maintaining a consistent thermostat setting throughout the day and night.

β€Œ

Before heading to bed, it's crucial to switch off electric heaters and extinguish any fires. If you have pets, make sure they're safe by providing a cosy, warm spot for them.

To avoid frozen pipes, the Met Office suggests opening kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to let warmer air circulate around the plumbing.

It's best to stay indoors and wear layers of loose, lightweight clothing instead of bulky items. Households are also warned against using their hob or ovens for heating as this can lead to elevated carbon monoxide levels.

Should your power go out, leave a light on so you'll know when the power is back. Check with neighbours to see if they're also affectedβ€”if they still have power, your trip switch might be on.
