Netflix is scrapping a “perfect film” starring legends from Slow Horses, Peaky Blinders and two Marvel icons.
As the New Year begins, plenty of memorable films are being added to Netflix ’s extensive library, including one with a Night Manager star, but many hits are also being axed.
From the Harry Potter franchise to Jaws, Mad Men and Suits, fan-favourites will no longer be ready to watch on the streamer and now an Oscar Award-winning film has been added to the list.
Scoring a near-perfect 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, fans haven’t been able to stop praising the period drama thriller since its release three years ago.
Someone posted: “This film is a masterclass in weaving narratives and different time periods while exploring the profound depths of a man whose actions altered the world's trajectory forever, for better or worse.”
Meanwhile, a fellow fan simply described it as “gripping, suspenseful and surprisingly intimate”.
Based on a true story, Oppenheimer sees physicist J Robert Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy) appointed to work on a top secret project during the Second World War.
He is tasked with developing the atomic bomb, spending years on the controversial Manhattan Project until his work is brought to life on July 16, 1945, when they witness the world ’s first nuclear explosion.
Unfortunately, fans haven’t got long before Oppenheimer will no longer be available to watch on Netflix as the film is set to leave the streamer on Sunday, January 11.
The three-hour film won a whopping seven Academy Awards at the 96th Oscars in 2024, including Best Picture, Best Director for Christopher Nolan and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy of Peaky Blinders fame.
Murphy is far from the only recognisable star in Oppenheimer either as he’s joined by Iron Man icon Robert Downey Jr, who won Best Supporting Actor, Little Women actress Florence Pugh and Slow Horses star Gary Oldman.
Other major cast members include A Quiet Place actress Emily Blunt, Trap star Josh Hartnett, Good Will Hunting legend Matt Damon and James Bond villain Rami Malek.
“After a busy career filled with masterpieces, Christopher Nolan finally succeeded in creating a perfect film," a fan praised.
“In fact, Oppenheimer might be the best film I have watched in a long, long time.”
A fellow fan commented: “Oppenheimer is - with no doubt- going to be one of the best movies in history.
“Amazing cinematography, Exceptional acting and terrifying Soundtracks.”
Numerous fans have labelled it a “cinematic masterpiece”, with one viewer elaborating: “This film will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on viewers, solidifying its place as one of the greatest achievements in modern cinema.”
Oppenheimer will be leaving Netflix on Sunday, January 11.
