A 'ferocious' action thriller that 'obliterates expectations' is now streaming on Prime Video.

Standards were set high among audiences for Ballerina when it originally hit cinemas last year. That is down to it being the first blockbuster spin-off to the critically praised and commercially successful John Wick franchise.

After four instalments in the Keanu Reeves led series, the studio behind it decided to expand the universe first with the TV series The Continental in 2023 and followed it up with Ballerina. Ana de Armas, who previously impressed with both her acting and action skills in Knives Out and James Bond movie No Time To Die, takes on the lead role.

She plays Eve Macarro, who is trained in the assassin traditions of the Ruska Roma. Taking on an army of killers as she seeks revenge against those responsible for the death of her father. The story takes place between the third and fourth John Wick films.

Len Wiseman directed Ballerina, after previously helming two of the Underworld films, along with Die Hard 4 and the Total Recall remake starring Colin Farrell. The script was penned by Shay Hatten who contributed to John Wick Chapter 3 and 4 as well as writing Army of the Dead which was directed by Zack Snyder.

While Ballerina did not win over the critics as much as the John Wick films it left the fans more than impressed. It boasts a fanscore or popcorn meter rating of 92% on website Rotten Tomatoes. Plenty of viewers who have already watch it consider it just as good as its predecessor John Wick.

One fan sharing their thoughts online, declared: "A new masterpiece joins the John Wick universe, one of the most powerful action film series. Fans of John Wick will enjoy this film greatly."

Another added: "Ballerina is an absolute knockout. A ferocious blend of grace and brutality that delivers some of the most unique action scenes I’ve seen in years.

"Ana de Armas completely obliterates expectations here. Her performance is so intense, precise, and downright savage that, at some point, I was just watching a pure force of vengeance tear through everything in her path."

While a third went so far as to say: "Brilliant, masterpiece. A juicy ripe cherry on top of the Wickverse. Ana De Armas shines in character, convincingly. Whole stellar cast excels. Amazing cinematography and visually stunning. Very well written and brought to screen by Len Wiseman. Incredible musical score."

They continued: "Filled to the rim with usual frantic action, rapid story pace, adrenaline, conviction, drama, intrigue, mystery, emotion and savageries typical of Wick. Perfect movie, very entertaining."

Someone else claimed: "So much fun to watch. I never re-watch movies, I've seen it three times! Love the elaborate fight scenes, and choreography. Highly recommend if you like John Wick movies. When I saw the pilot light in that dark alley - I yelled out loud!! Oh no!!!" Meanwhile one person commented: "The fight scenes were some of the best fight scenes I’ve seen, definitely the best fight scene in John Wick."
