Uruguay and Argentina are set to clash at the Estadio Centenario on Friday night, a showdown between the top two teams in the CONMEBOL standings for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Currently, Argentina sits at the summit with 25 points from 12 matches, while Uruguay trails closely with 20 points from an equal number of games. If both teams maintain these positions through to the end of qualifying, they will secure automatic spots in the upcoming World Cup.
Uruguay has faced some challenges in their recent qualifying matches. Their last outing resulted in a 1-1 draw against Brazil in November, marking their fourth draw out of six games, with only a single win during that stretch.
Argentina's performance hasn't been stellar either. Their narrow 1-0 victory over Peru at home was only their third win in six qualifiers, having suffered two losses as well.
In their previous encounter, Uruguay emerged victorious with a 2-0 win over Argentina back in 2023, which was Argentina's last defeat on home turf. Before that, Argentina had been unbeaten in seven head-to-heads against Uruguay, winning the last three meetings. This upcoming match promises to be a tightly contested affair, making it difficult to predict the outcome.
