Ibiza shows off 'baddest behaviour' as huge DJ tells Pacha to 'expect the unexpected' - The Mirror

It's not everyday that 'baddest behaviour' is praised, but for Drugs from Amsterdam DJ Mau P's epic Pacha set it looks as though Ibiza will be welcoming it for a long time to come

Every year, almost one million Brits descend on Ibiza, with one thing on many of their minds - party! And a trip to the White Island isn't complete without walking into the labyrinth that is Pacha.

Spanning 52 years of techno house music history, the club holds a legacy like no other and remains one of the island's oldest and most influential clubs. Every summer, the biggest names on the scene hit the venue seven days a week to put on a show to remember into the early hours.

So, it comes as no surprise that DJs from across the globe are always chomping at the bit to lay down their own foundations and become part of the Pacha legend. And for Dutch sensation Mau P, best known for his epic tune Drugs from Amsterdam which blew up worldwide in 2022, that's exactly what he wants to do with his new Baddest Behaviour residency at the iconic venue every Wednesday.

Speaking exclusively to the Mirror from the depths of the ever-expanding venue, Mau, whose real name is Maurits Westveen, gushed over what it means to him. "It's very iconic to me," he explained as he sat chilled in the green room through the mazy VIP sections, including the super-chilled Ricardo's room, prior to his latest performance.

"I've seen the pictures and video from Pacha from years ago and, yeah, it seems like it's been around forever and it means a lot to the dance music culture so to be a part of it now is really cool."

And he's certainly not wrong. It's known as being the birthplace of many legendary DJs over the years and has been a pioneering force for the scene. Speaking of the now, however, Mau, 28, told his fans to "expect the unexpected" from his 10-week residency.

This was definitely the case as he treated partiers to an eclectic mix of anthems during his August 20 show. Mixing the tunes with a range that switched from his own bangers, such as Mertha, to Michael Jackson's Billie Jean, before transitioning into Mousse T's Horny, Mau gave an upbeat and energetic performance to keep the party going over the generous 6am cut-off.

And it's this mix that he confessed just comes to him on the night as he opts for a "freestyle" way of doing things. But he believes keeping it fresh like this makes his show more entertaining and unique. "Every night here so far has been different," he said. "And it's probably going to be different the rest of the season, too.

"It's just because every night I just freestyle. Like, I don't prepare a thing. I have no idea what I'm going to be playing."

For his most recent Pacha showing, he teamed up with UK artist Hot Since 82 for a back-to-back session before going it solo for the remaining few hours. And it was a decision that simply came about at dinner that night.

"You never know what's about to happen," he went on. "And I think my style, just the way I DJ, is just unique among other DJs. My style is just a little bit of everything, but it always has a groove to it."

He effortlessly had the crowd lapping it up for his three-hour long set. Revellers had earlier been nicely warmed up by birthday girl LP Giobbi before Hot Since 82 took over the booth, which was surrounded by adoring fans on the main floor as well as the VIP balcony behind.

For the main event, Mau tagged in and had the beats seamlessly flowing and the arms of thousands raised as the strobe lights and smoke cannons filled the 3,000 capacity room.

"I think it feels like a special project," he told us of being one of the latest parts of the famous Pacha line-up. "It's not just any show where I can pull up to a show and plug in the USB. I just try to make a special night. With this, it's like with every new week you create more of a feeling for the residency. I mean, I just started but I'm really trying to create a thing on the Wednesdays.

"So, hopefully, next year people will recognise it's Baddest Behaviour at Pacha on Wednesday and think 'we should go because I have this memory of last time.' It takes time, but it feels like I'm building something within Pacha."

And explaining the decision to name his show Baddest Behaviour, Mau admitted it is a lyric from Outkast's Hey Ya! song. "They said they want to see everyone on your baddest behaviour and it's not grammatically correct - baddest is not a word - but it was just so good that I thought I have to use that." He then joked: "And no-one had used it before, so I thought 'perfect. No lawsuits whatsoever'

The Baddest Behaviour concept first entertained crowds in the United States before making its way to Pacha with the help of fellow DJ Solomun, whose hugely successful residency hits the venue every Sunday this summer.

And the BB project is something Mau hopes he can continue to grow. "I just want to make the whole Baddest Behaviour thing bigger and parties in different venues around Europe too because in the US it's been so successful and growing really well there, but I want to bring it to my home turf too."

But for now, it's just getting started with its 10-week run in Pacha. And for this 38-year-old who perhaps is more used to waking at 6am rather than partying these days, it's a show that will long live in the memory.

From the Pacha Family outdoor space, to the newly-added Paradiso bar, the spot's constant expansion is clear, while still offering up a boutique-type feel Pacha is well known for. Paradiso, the sophisticated, tropical-themed cocktail bar located on the rooftop, offers the perfect backdrop to get you ready for the fun and chaos that lies beneath as you party the night away.

The cocktail list offered up a range of classic delights as well as unique tastes - massive thanks to the well-versed staff member for pointing me in the right direction!

Of course, there is also the chance to fine dine in Pacha Restaurant too. Forget your pizza and pasta. This has a much more luxury focus, with the company calling it a "dining concept that fuses Japanese precision with Mediterranean soul".

Sharing it with my group, I was more than happy to tuck in to what was sent my way. My favourite - which I would never have expected - was the tuna belly with strawberry and tiger's milk dressing.

And what lies inside needs little explanation. A jam-packed dancefloor with the instantly recognisable cherries dangling from above and an epic strobe-lighting ceiling, it's obvious to see why people continue to travel from all over the world to visit the establishment. The world class DJs on show are also obviously a welcome addition!

Pacha and Mau P look like a perfect match. His cool vibes were well received and the Dutch disc jockey's huge following will be sure to continue to gravitate to the home of the party scene for the rest of the summer - and hopefully beyond.
