Marvel fans were at the edge of their seats when the list of new and returning cast members was announced for its upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday. The Doomsday film will be the fifth in the Avengers franchise, after the highest-grossing movie of all time for almost two years, Avengers: Endgame.
Doomsday is scheduled for release on May 1, 2026 and Marvel recently revealed the list of all the superheroes preparing for battle in a live stream on YouTube this week. Fan-favourites Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston are returning as Thor and Loki while Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan are returning as Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes. Paul Rudd's Ant-Man is also making a comeback for the movie.
Other huge stars joining the ensemble include Letitia Wright's Shuri, Simu Liu's Shang-Chi, Winston Duke's M'Baku, Tenoch Huerta Mejía’s Namor, Kelsey Grammer’s Hank McCoy, Danny Ramirez’s Joaquin Torres/Falcon, David Harbour’s Red Guardian, and Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova.
Hannah John-Kamen is also joining the ensemble as Ghost as well as Patrick Stewart’s Professor X. That's not all as the lead stars of the new Fantastic Four: First Steps - Pedro Pascal, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Vanessa Kirby and Joseph Quinn - will be part of the movie. Lewis Pullman, who makes his Marvel debut as Sentry in Thunderbolts this year, will also join the ensemble.
Others include Ian McKellen's Magneto, Alan Cumming's Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romjin's Mystique, James Marsden's Cyclops and Channing Tatum's Gambit. Fans already know that Tony Stark star Robert Downey Jr will be returning to the Marvel universe but as villain Doctor Doom.
While the roster boasts 27 names, some of the biggest prospects were noticeably absent. Marvel and Disney might be holding back the big reveals, as there was no word on Hugh Jackman's Wolverine or Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool.
Tom Holland's name was notably absent from the list of featured stars. His portrayal of Spider-Man, who joined the Avengers in earlier films through a deal with Sony, has been a contentious issue due to Sony's complex relationship with Marvel.
After the livestream ended, Robert Downey Jr commented on the long list of stars, writing: "“That’s what you call a deep bench of talent… actually it’s more like a row, but an extra long one… That must be it… right?”
Marvel’s official account resoponded: “There’s always room for more."
Scarlett Johansson (whose Black Widow died in Endgame), Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch, and a few other huge names weren't mentioned in the live stream.
The upcoming Avengers movie is part of Marvel Phase Six and is directed by brothers Anthony and Joseph Russo. The film has only just started filming and is expected to conclude at the end of summer.
