A cosmetic dermatologist has revealed the one ‘biggest mistake’ blemish sufferers make when treating spots in adulthood - and has created a product to combat it. Dr Sam Bunting has launched her cult-loved Flawless Neutralising Gel in a new roller format which is aimed at preventing breakouts, rather than simply treating them.

The new Flawless Neutralising Gel Roller is an evolution of the brand’s bestselling breakout treatment - a formula that took four years and 39 iterations to perfect. The new packaging means the treatment is available in a larger 50ml size with a precision-engineered roller applicator for effortless, zone-based prevention on the face and body.

Like the original, the Flawless Neutralising Gel Roller features a cocktail of spot-busting skincare ingredients, including 5% Azelaic Acid to reduce redness and smooth texture, as well as 2% Salicylic Acid to unclog pores and calm inflammation. Meanwhile, 0.5% Bakuchiol helps minimise post-blemish dark marks, with 5% Squalane working to add hydration and strengthens the skin barrier, which in turn makes for seamless make-up application, according to the brand.

The new applicator is inspired directly by Dr Sam Bunting’s work in her Harley Street clinic. She noticed that patients were treating their breakouts spot-by-spot, reacting to each new flare-up in isolation, rather than treating the whole area, be it the jawline, forehead or back.

She said: “The biggest mistake I saw in my acne patients often wasn’t the products they used - it was how they used them. Treating breakouts spot-by-spot keeps you in crisis mode. Treating the zone transforms everything. I created the Flawless Neutralising Gel Roller to make that correction effortless.”

Tackle blemishes blackheads and post-blemish marks quickly without drying out your skin. Formulated with Azelaic Acid, Salicylic Acid (BHA), Bakuchiol and Squalane, now with a precision roller delivery system for effortless, hygienic coverage across face and body.

Priced at £42, the benefits of the built-in roller applicator include a wider coverage, treating areas where blemishes are likely to occur. It’s also considered more hygienic, applying an even, thin layer with no mess.

What’s more is the formula delivers fast, visible results, with an independent eight-week clinical study seeing ‘significant reduction in blemishes’ and that it was ‘well tolerated even on sensitive skin’. That’s because it treats without the dryness or irritation often associated with traditional acne treatments, meaning it will also work well under their makeup without it appearing flakey.

Other treatments are available though, including the £25 Blemish SOS by Medik8 that boasts maximum strength salicylic acid (2%) for rapid reduction of blemishes, while calming redness to restore a clear and healthy-looking complexion.

Those seeking a budget-friendly alternative can look to the £15 La Roche-Posay Effaclar A.I. Breakout Corrector 15ml that's tailored for oily and blemish-prone skin, targeting imperfections and bolstering the skin's repair mechanism.

Not everyone gets along with all of the ingredients in some of these formulas, though with Salicylic Acid not always suitable for those allergic to aspirin. For anyone seeking a salicylic-free option, there’s Dr Barbara Sturm's Ultimate Stinky Pimple Treatment, priced at £30. This treatment specifically targets pimples and blemishes, helping to diminish their appearance quickly from the initial application.

The original Flawless Neutralising Gel has earned 1,000+ five-star reviews, and the new roller version is already racking up praise from shoppers, too, with an overall rating of 4.65 stars.

One said: “I have been using the neutralizing gel with the roller applicator everyday for four weeks and it has reduced blemishes, faded acne scarring and prevented new blemishes from appearing. It has become a staple in my daily routine.”

Another added: “Roller can be a bit difficult at times, when using the gel sometimes it peels off after it has dried but saying that this is the best gel I have used and has made a good difference to my skin.”

“The application was great. Great for larger areas like the chin and cheeks where you get hormonal acne,” said a third. “Definitely better than using the normal one where I was just putting it on individual spots instead of an area. I don’t think it worked too well on scarring but that is just my skin.”

“Love the product. The roller is very soothing on the skin and has a nice cooling effect,” another commented.

A fifth shopper said: “I loved this product before the roller applicator but now, I don't know how I lived without it. It is incredible for covering larger areas, without having to waste product using your hands. It dispenses slowly so you can really target-treat areas. The roller applicator acted almost like a gua sha and I used it to soothe away stress from my face whilst applying which helped reduce puffiness and made it feel more like a treatment rather than a skincare chore.”
