A main road in Merseyside has been shut for hours as police respond to a serious crash. Merseyside Police is currently at the scene on Marine Drive in Southport, near to the junction with Hesketh Road, after a car was involved in a collision with a man.

The road is currently closed between the junctions with Hesketh Road and Marshside Road while emergency services respond to the crash. Drivers are asked to avoid the route.

Traffic either side of the closure

According to the AA traffic monitor, there appears to be a slight build up of traffic either side of the road closure.

Police have asked drivers to avoid the area following the incident at 5.30am today.

Incident between car and a male pedestrian, police say

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said:

We can confirm emergency services are currently in Southport following a serious collision this morning (Wednesday 24 December).

At around 5.30am, we received a report that a collision had occurred on Marine Drive, near its junction with Hesketh Road, involving a car and a male pedestrian.

A road closure is currently in place at the scene and motorists are advised to avoid the route while emergency services deal with the incident.
