A person has died after being hit by a train on the railway line in Leicestershire.

British Transport Police (BTP) said officers were called to the railway line in Leicester at 4.43am this morning (Thursday, January 15) to reports of a casualty on the tracks.

BTP officers responded alongside paramedics, but in a statement confirmed that a person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious, a BTP spokesperson said.

A file will be prepared for the coroner. All lines between Loughborough and Leicester were closed while emergency services attended to the scene.

The incident had a significant impact on Thursday morning commuters, with CrossCountry and East Midlands Railway services both affected. The disruption affected trains on the London St Pancras/Nottingham/Sheffield and Leicester/Nottingham routes.

Trains between Loughborough and Leicester were cancelled or delayed by up to 60 minutes. The line has now reopened between Loughborough and Leicester.

However, East Midlands Railway said there will be delays and alterations to services while they work to recover the advertised timetable. Trains may still be delayed by up to 45 minutes, revised or cancelled, with disruption expected until 10am.

Earlier today, a spokesperson for East Midlands Railway said: "We are sad to report that a person has been hit by a train. This has occurred between Loughborough and Leicester and is impacting East Midlands Railway trains on the London St Pancras International / Nottingham / Sheffield, and Leicester / Nottingham routes.

A National Rail spokesperson stated that "trains running between Loughborough and Melton Mowbray / Leicester may be cancelled, revised or delayed by up to 60 minutes."
