The Met Office's rain warning lasting 13 hours is now in force

A fresh weather warning has been issued for Leicester and Leicestershire, just one week after Storm Goretti brought chaos to the city and wider county.

The yellow warning, issued by the Met Office, covers 13 hours in which heavy downpours are anticipated. The hours expected to bring the heaviest rainfall “may lead to some flooding”, the UK’s national weather service said.

According to the hour-by-hour forecast for Leicester, moderate winds are expected at around 7mph for later this afternoon heading into the early evening. A weather map suggests that rain will spread north-eastwards on Thursday, January 15.

The city of Leicester itself is covered by the warning, as well as the wider county, with other areas in the East Midlands, including Lincolnshire, also set to be affected. The yellow warning is in place from 9am until 11pm.

Rainfall is set to become persistent and heavy at times, before clearing to the northeast throughout the evening and night. The Met Office said that around 20 to 30mm of rain is expected “fairly widely” in a matter of several hours.

A few isolated areas could experience up to 40 to 50mm of rainfall. The Met Office noted that this would most likely be across parts in the south of England.

People have been urged to take care while out on the roads, and be prepared for challenging driving conditions. The weather forecasting service has advised that drivers stick to main roads as they will have a lower risk of flooding.
