Everything you need to know about Leicester city centre stabbing incident

  • A young man is in hospital after he was stabbed in a busy part of Leicester city centre this afternoon (Thursday, January 15). Leicestershire Police said it received a report that a 19-year-old man had been stabbed in Granby Street, shortly after 1pm.
  • A cordon was put in place in Granby Street following the incident while officers undertook their investigation. Several police cars attended the scene alongside East Midlands Ambulance Service, with paramedics taking the victim to hospital for treatment.
  • According to the police, enquiries to establish the circumstances of what happened are continuing, but at the moment no arrests have been made in relation to the incident. Officers issued an urgent appeal for witnesses to come forward.
  • Speaking about the appeal, a police spokesperson said: "Given this incident happened in a busy part of the city, I’m sure there will be people who can help our investigation. I’d urge any witnesses – including anyone who captured the incident on a mobile phone or dashcam – to come forward."
  • People working in the area told LeicestershireLive they were "shocked" to hear about the stabbing, as one worker said: "It's a big shock. I only went on my lunch break so to hear there has been a stabbing is a shock."
  • Officers at the scene told our reporter Dylan Hayward that the cordon in Granby Street is set to remain in place for the rest of the day. The cordon has been minimised to the junction of Granby Street and Bishop Street, allowing vehicles and pedestrians to pass by.
