Hull City head coach Sergej Jakirovic has confirmed the club are in talks with Manchester United over signing midfielder Toby Collyer on loan until the end of the season.

Collyer spent the first half of the season on loan at West Brom, but returned to Old Trafford last month after his move to the Baggies was cut short, partly because he'd sustained a calf injury.

The 22-year-old had been in talks with a move to the MKM Stadium in the summer, but opted to move to The Hawthorns after talks with then United loan manager Jonny Evans, a former Baggies player.

His move to the Black Country struggled to get going, and he made just 12 appearances under Ryan Mason before heading back to Carrington.

City, who remain unable to pay transfer or loan fees, are hopeful of getting a short-term deal for Collyer over the line in the coming days.

"We have an option to bring Collyer from Man United, so we will see," Jakirovic told Hull Live. "We spoke already this summer. It was a very nice conversation together with Jonny Evans at that time, who was the loan manager (at United), but at that time, he chose West Brom, which is OK I respect that.

"Maybe he didn't believe that we would have a good season, and have a good team. It was tricky back then, when you have an embargo, you cannot bring the players. Also, you must look after yourself because you need the minutes, and maybe in our team it's easier to get the minutes."

In keeping with the City's first half of the season, Collyer had been struck down with a calf injury, but is on the verge of being fully fit, and he's somebody Jakirovic feels can make a positive impact.

"He's fine now. He had a calf injury as well," the Croatian said. "He's a young player, and he's capable of playing in the six or eight position. He can run 12K every game, so I think that he can help us, we can help him, and I think he will fit in the team good."
