Overnight closures will continue on the A63 Castle Street project almost every night until March as it moves into its "complex final phase". National Highways says the £355m scheme is "approaching a key milestone" with traffic set to start using the new underpass soon.

During this phase, closures will be in place in both directions from 8pm until 6am, including weekends, until Sunday, March 1, between Daltry Street and Roger Millward Way. The only exception so far announced will be this coming weekend - Saturday, January 17 and Sunday, January 18 - due to a "slight change in the planned works" meaning the overnight closures then are no longer required.

A National Highways spokesperson added: "Once traffic is travelling in the underpass, these overnight closures will allow us to complete the connections of the junction entry and exit slip roads and connect Commercial Road to Ferensway.

"This is a complex final phase of the scheme. In the coming weeks, you may see some of the road layout start to change. Please follow updated information signs, stay in lane, and take extra care within the temporary traffic management."

Precise timings will be revealed for the opening of the underpass once they are confirmed. National Highways had already announced the road would be closed each night for the rest of January before confirming the same would apply throughout February.

In November, National Highways said work to the main underpass has "included the installing of ninety-six pre-cast brick wall panels to the side of the underpass, work on the bridge deck, and creating the new central barrier".

Work to lower the A63 at the junction with Ferensway and Commercial Road to create a new split-level interchange and widen the eastbound carriageway between Princes Dock Street and Market Place began in early 2020. It was originally due to be completed in Spring 2025 but a year-long delay was announced in December 2024 after "extremely challenging ground conditions" were discovered that "could not have been anticipated before the scheme began".

The project is currently estimated to be completed in spring this year.

Closures on another part of the A63

Meanwhile, National Highways has also confirmed another section of the A63 will be closed for up to five nights for resurfacing work this month. The project, which is being carried out at the same time as the adjacent Castle Street scheme, will get underway next Monday (January 19).

During the works, which will continue each night until January 23, the westbound carriageway will be shut to traffic between Southcoates roundabout and the junction with the A1165 Great Union Street. The same diversion as the overnight works on the A63 Castle Street project will be in place.
