Cleethorpes Beach's new pop up sauna is the perfect place 'to step out of daily noise' - Grimsby Live

"At its heart, Salthouse Sauna is about offering people an hour to slow down. It’s a place to step out of daily noise and give yourself fully to presence and stillness, to honour your body and the journey it carries you on."

A sauna has introduced a different way for people to enjoy the benefits of the beach. Salthouse Sauna is a wood-fired pop-up sauna that gets toasty warm, even on dark January days.

It is the brainchild of Hope Phillipson, who launched it with a free introductory session at Cleethorpes Beach on New Year's Day. Hope said the sauna encourages people to get outdoors and enjoy the benefits of the sea.

The aim is for community-led, small sessions, with mindful use of the beach that has a low impact on the environment. The sauna comfortably fits 10 people and communal sessions last 55 minutes, starting on the hour.

Explaining how the idea came about, Hope said: "We went to Norway last year, and they have got loads of saunas there. They were in the marinas and next to the water, so you go into the hot sauna and then jump straight into the freezing cold to get that cold contrast therapy."

Hope said she "fell in love with the rhythm of sauna and cold-water plunging" and it "planted the seed" for what would become Salthouse, here in Cleethorpes, but inspired by Norway.

She added: "Cleethorpes is my home, and I’ve always felt firmly rooted on the seafront. I know how special the sunrises can be here, and I’m excited for the sauna to sit naturally alongside that sea, heat, and space to breathe.

"At its heart, Salthouse Sauna is about offering people an hour to slow down. It’s a place to step out of daily noise and give yourself fully to presence and stillness, to honour your body and the journey it carries you on.

"People often leave feeling refreshed, reconnected, and a little hot. It’s also a space for connection with others; coming alone is welcomed, and many people end up meeting new faces. We’ve even started a WhatsApp community so regulars can get to know each other beyond the sauna.

"Looking ahead, my hope for Salthouse Sauna is simply to get something good going. Saunas are popping up all over the UK, and I feel Cleethorpes could really benefit from something a little different.

"I’d love for it to become a place people turn to when they need a pause, slow mornings that start with a sauna and end with a coffee and a chat with mates. Connection is at the forefront of everything I’m trying to build, and I hope Salthouse becomes a small but meaningful part of the local community."

Hope said the free session on New Year's Day went well, but Storm Goretti had temporarily halted sessions. As soon as the weather improves, Salthouse Sauna will be up and running again.
