A Pontins holiday park popular among families in Gloucestershire and the Midlands was evacuated and locked down yesterday, police have confirmed.

Hundreds of holidaymakers were evacuated from the Pontins' resort in Brean yesterday (Tuesday, August 17) after 'malicious communications' were made to the resort, Somerset Live reports.

The full nature of the communication is not yet known, but the complex was shut down at 6.30pm and police have launched an inestigation.

People were asked to stay outside the gates of the complex while the matter was investigated, and vehicles were also stopped from entering the site.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: β€œWe are investigating a report of a malicious communication made yesterday (Tuesday 17 August) to Pontins Resort, Brean.

β€œAn evacuation was ordered as a precautionary measure while enquiries were carried out at the site.

β€œWe would like to reassure people that we do not believe that there is any credible threat to the safety of the public.
