The decision to sack Erik ten Hag has seen Manchester United's compensation bill rise to a whopping Β£70million. Ten Hag, 54, was given his marching orders by the Old Trafford hierarchy off the back of the Red Devils' 2-1 away loss to West Ham United, which has left them in 14th position.

He becomes the latest permanent manager to be sacked on the red side of Manchester after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal and David Moyes. It's understood the former Ajax manager will be paid around Β£17.5m in compensation, just four months after the club triggered a one-year contract extension on his deal.

The figure is also believed to be Β£7.5m more than what United would have paid if they had dismissed him in the summer. It's the second highest severance package any United manager would have received in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

According to GOAL, Ten Hag will receive Β£17.5m on his way out of the club. Only Mourinho's purported final fee of Β£19.6m in 2018 is believed to be larger.

The Dutchman was recently granted a stay of execution when United's top brass met for a meeting with Ratcliffe in London on October 8. At the time, the Red Devils had just drawn 3-3 away to Porto in the Europa League and 0-0 away to Aston Villa.

They went on to come from behind to see off Brentford 2-1 in the Premier League, before being held to a 1-1 draw away to Turkish giants Fenerbahce. But Sunday's, albeit controversial, loss to West Ham in east London proved to be the final straw for the United hierarchy.

Former United forward and Ten Hag's assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the Red Devils on an interim basis while they club line up a permanent successor. United confirmed the sacking and the current situation in a blunt statement released on their website.

It read: β€œErik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager. Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.

"We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future. Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited."

Ten Hag leaves with the club struggling in 14th position, seven points behind fourth placed Aston Villa and 12 behind current Premier League leaders Manchester City. United are also 21st in the Europa League table, having drawn all three of their matches in the competition.

Former Barcelona manager Xavi has been linked with the hotseat at Old Trafford.
