2025 is about to come to an end, but whilst many people are relaxing in preparation for the new year, the weather has other ideas. According to reports, blizzards could be about to hit parts of the UK as far south as Birmingham and London.
This won’t be the first time the UK has been hit by snow in recent years, with drivers well-versed in being given tips and tricks for how to survive icy roads if they take to the tarmac.
However, it’s not just about how someone drives on the road, but how they prepare for it too, including what state they leave their windscreen wipers in.
In some parts of the world, it is sometimes recommended to leave one’s windscreen wipers pointing up to make it easier to get the snow off and reduce the risk of them freezing to the windscreen.
However, other experts recommend against this, as they say it could damage the wipers and leave them vulnerable to being blown off the car by strong winds.

Speaking about the matter to CT Insider, automotive expert John Paul warned that leaving them up could damage the springs that hold the wiper to the car.
Furthermore, this decision could leave the internals of the wiper more exposed to the elements, meaning they won’t work as well when the weather gets warmer.
Instead, a spokesperson for AAA Northeast Robert Sinclair Jnr recommended in a statement: “You can put a blanket or snow cover over the windshield and weigh it down with some bricks prior to a storm. The next morning, pull off the blanket and the windshield is clear.”
Meanwhile, Britons around the country are being warned to brace for a winter storm in areas such as Bristol, Swansea, and Southampton.
Furthermore, other pieces of advice are also being given to British drivers through social media platform TikTok, with one clip from Stuart Miller Solicitors warning that drivers should remove all snow and ice from their cars before setting off, or risk a four-figure fine, reports the Express.
As to why, they said: “Snow sliding from your roof can obstruct your view, which can lead to endangering others and violating the Road Traffic Act. The penalty for this can be a fine of up to £1,000.”
As well as potentially seeing snow at the end of this year, the Met Office has also suggested flakes could fall at the start of the next. In their long range weather forecast for the start of January, they said: “An area of low pressure moves through the North Sea at first, which leads to rain and showers spreading south across the UK.

“Thereafter high pressure will likely be centred to the northwest with low pressure to the east, which allows a cold, showery, northerly flow develop for a time.
“For many this leads to a fairly settled period but there will be some wintry hazards including perhaps snow to low levels to north facing coastal areas at times.”
