Improved play areas and a new outdoor gym are included in a major £1.1million revamp of a “popular and cherished” Essex park. Promenade Park in Maldon, the town’s “major tourist attraction”, will see the new facilities, which were top of the wish list from local residents.

The new gym is being planned to increase free facilities available and help residents and visitors boost their health and wellbeing. There will also be new play areas, including an expansion of the 'Secret Garden' play area.

The park will also have free public Wi-Fi, a new nature trail, and new kiosks selling food and drinks. Works are already underway on the project, which was agreed by Maldon District Council in the summer.

The park opened in 1895 and has the largest waterside in Essex, according to Visit Maldon. It also offers visitors and residents sports pitches with changing rooms, a children’s splash park, a crazy golf course, and a petting zoo.

Richard Siddall, leader of Maldon District Council, said: “As part of our Promenade Park management plan, the council is pleased to be undertaking some refurbishment works to the kiosks in Promenade Park. Visitors will see that the kiosks will soon be clad in wood and painted green to bring them in line with other buildings and shelters in the park, with large doors being fitted across the serving areas and roller shutters to give them a fresh, new look.

“The work is due to be carried out on two kiosks at a time – the first pair being due for completion prior to the February half-term holidays and the remaining two by the end of March.

“This work is part of the £1.1million capital investment being made within the park under the Promenade Park management plan, which was agreed in summer 2025. Other investment projects in the park include improving safety for young people, a new lakeside seating area, free public Wi-Fi, a new nature trail, new biodiversity areas, improved play sites and a new outdoor gym.”

These plans follow work on Maldon's amphitheatre, which reopened to the public in October after an £85,000 revamp. The council said the works were to “enhance” and “improve” the attraction.
