A disgruntled plane passenger has lambasted an airline for serving him what he dubbed the 'world's worst sandwich' - an offering that was not only seemingly missing half its filling but was also apparently barely larger than his thumb. Oisín Breen found himself on an Aer Lingus flight from Dublin, Ireland to Toronto, Canada in December 2025, en route to Jamaica the next day for a visit to his fiancée's family.
Five hours into the seven-hour journey, the 40-year-old was presented with his second meal of the flight. Opting for the vegetarian choice, he selected a cheese and relish sandwich. However, upon receiving his meal, Oisín was taken aback by the poor standard and quality of the food he was given.
Photographs reveal the 'miniature' sandwich was scarcely longer than his thumb, boasting a paltry slice of cheese and a smattering of relish that covered less than a quarter of the bread. Oisín, who is a journalist and poet, decried the snack as 'atrocious', branding it the 'worst sandwich' he had ever encountered.
Oisín, who booked his flight through American Airlines but flew with Aer Lingus, says that he voiced his dissatisfaction about the subpar sandwich to the flight attendant, who agreed with him. This disappointing in-flight dining experience has led him to reconsider whether he will choose to fly with Aer Lingus in the future, after being served what he described as a plate of 'bilge'.
Aer Lingus expressed regret that the service was not up to their 'usual standard', attributing it to a problem with their catering supplier. Oisín, who lives in Edinburgh, said: "Frankly, it would have been better not to feed us, just to ditch the in-flight meal concept entirely.
"I'm contemplating never flying with them again, largely because I'd appreciate honesty. If they're still claiming to be a proper carrier, do the job properly. World's worst sandwich is a big claim but it's up there. It was inedible."
An Aer Lingus spokesperson clarified: "Customers travelling in the Economy cabin on Aer Lingus' transatlantic flights to Toronto enjoy two complimentary meal services, along with a range of refreshments throughout the journey. The first service includes a hot main course with dessert, salad, and bread, while the second is a lighter option featuring a sandwich and a sweet treat.
"We regret that due to an issue with our catering supplier in late December, our second service offering on this flight was not our usual standard. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this temporary issue, which has since been rectified."
American Airlines have been approached for a comment.
