Orchids often become somewhat dry and droopy during January, but there's a straightforward method to help the plant recover and produce much larger blooms over the coming months. Winter presents challenges for tropical houseplants, as they require high humidity to maintain hydrated leaves, whilst the continuous use of central heating strips moisture from the air, reports the Express.

Positioning an orchid on a windowsill can also create issues, as these spots are frequently draughty during this period and cold temperatures can place excessive stress on the root system. Neglecting orchids in dried out and cold air can damage flower spikes, increasing the likelihood that any blooms produced next year will be weaker and smaller.

Nevertheless, Jon, an expert from Brilliant Orchids, has revealed that you can help revive an orchid by providing it with the correct nutrients, which can be easily obtained from leftover rice water. Jon explained: "Brown rice water provides thiamin, niacin, folic acid, and riboflavin. Use left-over room temperature brown rice water to water in place of regular water."

Rice water isn't a fertiliser, but rather a gentle tonic rich in the minerals orchids require to recover after exposure to a cold and dry environment throughout winter. Leftover rice water contains vitamin B, which supports healthy plant cells and helps orchids gradually begin growing again.

It also provides magnesium, phosphorus and potassium, essential nutrients that plants need for growth and will significantly support the root system. Healthy roots are crucial for orchids as they help store more energy.

Once the plants start receiving sufficient light, they will produce a healthier flower spike and are likely to grow larger blooms.

How to use rice water to help orchids in late winter

Firstly, save the water left over from cooking rice, ensuring it doesn't contain any salt, oil or seasonings. Allow the water to cool completely before mixing one part rice water with four parts tap water in a spray bottle or watering can.

Rice water is rich in starch, which benefits plants, but an excess can block the soil and damage the roots. Diluting the rice water with regular tap water ensures it flows freely and drains properly, preventing starch build-up in the plant pot.

Water your orchids with this rice water mixture every four weeks, and you'll notice much healthier roots. This will assist the plant in flowering once it starts growing again in the spring.
