Discount retailer Poundland has announced another round of store closures, with the initial three branches shutting within days. The budget chain has been shrinking its presence this year as it seeks to enhance its performance and secure its future on Britain's high streets.

Stores scheduled for closure are currently holding clearance sales, providing reductions of up to 40% as they attempt to clear remaining inventory. Shopes imminently closing include Plymstock on January 20 and Gosport on January 29.

Following these adjustments, the budget retailer has pledged to price approximately 60% of grocery items at £1 throughout its remaining outlets. This move follows a five-month trial at 17 locations in the West Midlands.

The firm stated the scheme will see it return "back to its roots" and mark "the end of additional price complexity", with straightforward pricing set to be rolled out across general merchandise and clothing ranges in the coming months.

Poundland's outlet numbers are expected to drop to between 650 and 700 from 800 last year, as tenancy agreements expire or landlords exercise their right to serve notice.

The chain has also verified that stores facing closure are conducting major sales to clear their stock. A Poundland spokesperson commented: "Customers will be able to take advantage of significant savings as these stores prepare for closure in the days ahead.

"The reductions of up to 40pc will see items marked down in price until they're sold and cover all the stock in each store from homewares to groceries and clothing to health and beauty."

"The special reductions, on top of the value we provide in every store, will help us leave locations we're leaving with pride.
