Snow arrived in Derbyshire as the region was hit by the first named major storm which closed roads, schools and the runway at East Midlands Airport.
The runway was reopened after a few hours but there was disruption to flights throughout most of Friday (January 9).
An amber warning was in place across the region, with up to 30cm of snow expected in some parts of the county from Storm Goretti.
The Peak District particularly was expected to experience significant snowfall with other lower regions also in line for up to 15cm, according to the Met Office.
Motorists were urged to avoid non-essential journeys or seek alternative means of transport.
Derbyshire County Council announced that some high passes would be closed from 6pm on Thursday night (January 8) to ensure the safety of motorists, including:
- The A57 Snake Pass, from the junction with the A6013 to Glossop
- The A54/A537 Cat and Fiddle, from the junction with Leek Road, Buxton to the county boundary
- The A6024 Holme Moss, from the junction with the A628 to the county boundary
- The A53 Axe Edge, from the junction with Grin Low Road, Buxton to the county boundary
- The A5004, Long Hill, from the Horwich End traffic lights at Whaley Bridge to the A53 St John’s Road, Buxton
In addition the Via Gellia (A5012) was closed, from just after Woodside Cafe after the junction with the road to Bonsall up to Grangemill (the junction with the B5056).
Public services and councils worked throughout Friday (January 9) to restore power and reopen roads
East Midlands Railway confirmed they would close some train routes overnight on Thursday, including the link from Derby to Crewe from 8pm, as well as the service between Derby and Matlock from 8pm.
All lines are expected to reopen on Friday morning, although some had failed to do so between Derby and Nottingham and Sheffield and Manchester, and customers have been advised to check timetables before they travelled.

16:00 - News on the Via Gellia route
Derbyshire County Council has put out a message:
"We're working to get Via Gellia (A5012) open following closure last night due to concerns about the risk of trees affected by ash dieback disease coming down on the road during #StormGoretti.
"We're carrying out an inspection and will grit shortly to make sure it's safe to use."
15:25 - Train travel
The poor weather conditions mean that there is still no service on CrossCountry between Derby and Nottingham.
Aditionally, there is no service on Transpennine Express, Northern and East Midlands Railway between Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield still.
15:24 - Timely advice for air travellers
Travel information website Inrix is saying that disruption to flights from East Midlands Airport is still continuing after the runway was closed following heavy overnight snow.
Inrix says "live flight data shows some flights are being delayed up to 3 hours".
Passengers are advised to check with their airlines before travel.
15:16 - More roads reopened
Derbyshire County Council has said that two more roads have re-opened.
The A6024 Holme Moss and the A57 Snake Pass, which towards the top is passable with care.
A social media statement said that the authority is awaiting feedback from the roads team on the situation at Winnatts Pass.
14:49 - Chaddesden bin update
Chaddesden councillors have said that, after the crews were sent out to collect bins at 9am, they had to be pulled back due to safety concerns.
They added: "Unfortunately, the office has had to pull them in as collectors were falling over and one vehicle had hit a car.
"There are five additional vehicles out on Monday so if you bin hasn't been collected today please leave out early Monday morning for collection.
"Don't forget you can leave extra black bags out with your bin.
"Sorry for the inconvenience."
13:14 - Council issues gritting update
Derbyshire County Council has issued a gritting update after their gritting teams have worked through the night to keep roads open.
During the morning, the teams have been concentrating on primary routes, and from 1pm, they will then move to grit the secondary routes, from 4pm do another round on the primary routes, and again at 4am.
A spokesperson said: "We've got our farmer contractors out in many areas helping to plough some of the more rural roads.
"With a lot of very wet roads, and freezing temperatures expected tonight, please take care out there later on.
"We've still got the A57 Snake Pass, and A6024 Holme Moss closed, will update when we get these re-opened. Winnatts Pass is closed due to abandoned vehicles.
"Our thanks to all our gritting teams and farmer contractors for everything they have done."
12:22 - Bin collections in the Derbyshire Dales suspended
Derbyshire Dales District Council announced bin collections would be suspended today (January 9), with recovery collections set to begin tomorrow.
Residents have been asked to leave their bins out.
A spokesperson said: "Following a 5am safety assessment of the access route to our Longcliffe depot and an assessment of the roads due for waste collection today we’ve made the decision to suspend all bin collections.
"While main roads are clear, the access route and side roads are not safe.
"Our message to residents remains – please leave your bins out.
"We hope to begin recovery collections tomorrow (Saturday).
"However, with temperatures forecast to drop to -5°C tonight, a final decision will be made in the morning once we re-assess road conditions. Please check our social media channels for the latest updates.
"Thank you for your continued patience and understanding."
11:52 - Further weather warning for Derbyshire issued
Another weather warning has been issued for Derbyshire on Sunday.
The area has been placed under a yellow alert, with snow and rain likely to hit the county in the morning.
Some places could experience a further ten centimetres of snow.
11:21 - Roads reopen after night-long closure
Some roads have reopened after being closed overnight.
Derbyshire County Council confirmed that the A5004 (Long Hill) and A53 (Axe Edge) are now both open.
A spokesperson said: "We are working on the A537 (Cat and Fiddle), A57 (Snake Pass) and A6024 (Holme Moss) and will update you later when we get them open again.
"Winnatts Pass is closed due to abandoned vehicles.
"Please drive to the conditions."
11:02 - Bin collections in Amber Valley suspended
Amber Valley Borough Council has announced that bin collections would be suspended today (January 9) due to the weather conditions.
A spokesperson said: "Due to adverse weather conditions and the safety of our crews, residents and property, we have taken the decision to suspend all bin collections today, including household and trade waste.
"If your bin was due to be collected yesterday or today and has been missed, please take it back in and present it again for collection from 6am on Monday morning.
"With the ongoing cold conditions, bin contents may freeze. To help our crews empty bins safely and effectively, please make sure items are kept as loose as possible, as frozen contents may not empty properly.
"Next week, collections may take place later than planned as crews work through missed collections caused by the adverse weather. We know which streets have been missed, so there is no need to report this.
"We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your support in keeping our crews safe."
10:39 - CrossCountry issues train update
Nick Westcott, CrossCountry's service delivery director, said: "Storm Goretti has had a significant impact on the CrossCountry network, particularly across the West Midlands, and the past 24 hours have been extremely challenging for both customers and colleagues.
"Heavy snowfall in the Birmingham area resulted in several trains being stranded and prevented access to our depot, meaning many trains were unable to refuel overnight.
"Ongoing difficulties for crews travelling into Birmingham have further affected operations.
“As a result, services today are severely disrupted.
"There are currently no services operating from Birmingham towards Manchester, Nottingham or Cardiff, with only a limited service running on other routes.
"Our teams are working around the clock with Network Rail to manage the impacts of the storm while maintaining a safe service.
"Customers are strongly advised to check before travelling; tickets dated for travel today can be used on CrossCountry services up to and including Monday, January 12."

08:33 - East Midlands Designer Outlet to be closed today
East Midlands Designer Outlet has announced it is set to be closed today.
A spokesperson confirmed via Facebook saying the outlet was closed due to "adverse weather" and thanked customers for their understanding.
07:37 - EMA runway opens after snow stopped flights
East Midlands Airport has announced that its runway is now open again after being temporarily closed due to heavy snow from Storm Goretti.
The closure was announced during the early hours of this morning and resulted in flights being delayed.
A social media post from EMA at 6.20am said: "Following a temporary runway closure this morning due to heavy snow, our runway is now back open and flights have resumed. "However, there may be some delays throughout the day.
"The safety of our passengers is our top priority, and we appreciate your patience during this time.
"Please continue to check with your airline for the latest information on your flight and take extra care when travelling to the airport."
06:27 - Bus provider Trentbarton issues update on services
In a recent post on social media, Trentbarton provided a full update on its services for this morning. (January 9).
A spokesperson said: "As of 05:30 there are no services running out of Sutton Depot: Threes, nines, 90, connect
"H1 - Currently not running.
"The two and Ilkeston flyer - Starting from Ilkeston as Ilkeston Road is currently blocked.
"31,32,33,34 and 35 - Currently not running until the estates can be checked.
"My15 - Will be going Trent Lane and Castle Donington By-Pass - we will not serve Castle Donington estate or Park Lane.
"The Mickleover - Normal route up Western Junction, then diverting up to Station road missing all stops between Duneden Close and Vicarage Avenue. Turning round at Mickleover Court hotel then coming back the same way missing all the same stops.
"Sixes - 6.2 and 6.3 will not be serving the estates, running between Derby and Belper only.
"Little sixes - Currently being assessed.
"Swift - main roads okay, unable to serve Langley Country Park, Hill top estate, Mayfield estate & Denstone.
"Comet - Currently being assessed.
"Skylink Nottingham - Airport to Coalville - Diseworth, Whitwick and Coalville are not passable - Coalville part of the route is not being served and services are terminating at EMA and waiting for there return departure back to Nottingham."
For the services not listed Trentbarton has not been advised of any issues and they will be running as normal.
05:29 - Airport provides update and says runway remains shut
In a recent update, the airport said: "Due to heavy snowfall earlier this morning, our runway remains closed. Our teams are working hard to clear the runway and restore operations as soon as possible.
"The safety of our passengers is our top priority, and we appreciate your patience during this time. If you are due to travel today, please check with your airline for the latest information on your flight and allow extra time for your journey.
"National Highways have some road closures in place on their network so we will provide further updates as soon as possible. Check before you travel."

01:52 - Most significant impacts will be felt across Midlands
According to the experts, the Midlands and Wales will see the most impact from snow - while the south-west is battered by strong winds.
Met Office chief forecaster Neil Armstrong said: “Storm Goretti will be a multi-hazard event, with the most significant impacts from snow in parts of Wales and the Midlands and the very strong winds in the far South West, though heavy rain in some parts of Wales and East Anglia also has the potential to bring disruption to many.”
23:56 - Thousands of homes without power across UK
Thousands of homes are without power as Storm Goretti hits the UK with a rare red warning issued for “dangerous, stormy” winds.
The Met Office said “violent gusts” will hit parts of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly over the next few hours bringing a potential danger to life.
Winds of 99mph have already been recorded at St Mary’s Airport on the Isles of Scilly, which is a new record for the site, the forecaster said.
More than 47,000 properties were without power in the South West at about 9pm, according to National Grid’s website, while more than 5,000 had no power in the West Midlands and 2,000 in Wales.

20:37 - Woodhead pass shut
The A628 Woodhead Pass is now also shut in both directions due to snow, between Tintwistle and A616 (Flouch Roundabout).
This is also a scheduled closure ahead of the heavy snowfall tonight.

The A57 Snake Pass is shut in both directions due to snow between A6013 / A57 (Ladybower Reservoir) Ladybower Reservoir and Hurst Road (Royal Oak Inn).

18:53 - Derbyshire County Council warns of up to 30cm of snow
Derbyshire County Council has warned people to stay in and travel only if their journey is essential.
They warned of up to 30cm of snow in parts of the county, which will be very difficult for their team of gritters and ploughs to keep on top of.
A spokesperson said: "Please consider keeping an eye on vulnerable relatives and neighbours while this cold weather is with us.
"Wrap up warm and stay safe out there."
18:38 - Derby City Council asks people to stay home on Friday
Derby City Council has asked people to stay home on Friday "if possible".
A spokesperson confirmed there were currently no plans to close any of the Council buildings or offices, but many of the services can be accessed through the website.
Anyone who is travelling has been asked to allow extra time, check public transport, travel via gritted A and B roads, and be mindful of road closures.
A spokesperson said: "At home, you should try and keep your property warm and ensure you have enough supplies.
"Power cuts can happen, so it’s important to have torches, batteries, and portable chargers ready and accessible."
18:03 - East Midlands Airport issues update
East Midlands Airport has issued an update, saying its team was working to minimise any disruption caused.
Anyone travelling in or out of the airport has also been reminded to allow for extra time on the roads, as public transport may be disrupted.
No flight cancellations due to the weather have been announced.
