Martin Gemmell, from Peterhead, died at the Golden Jubilee Hospital in Clydebank on December 25.
β
The circumstances surrounding the death of the 29-year-old prisoner at HMP Kilmarnock remain unclear but not suspicious.
β
The Scottish Prison Service confirmed the death has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal.
Gemmell, then 22, was jailed in 2019 alongside Brandon Douglas, 18 and Brandon Wilson, 22, after the trio targeted Allan Roy in his home in Sandhaven in November 2018.
β
The three men burst into the victim's home and left him with serious, life-changing injuries.
The victim was repeatedly struck on the head and body with an axe and knife before he locked himself in the bathroom of the property.
However, the men battered their way through the door with the axe and dragged him out and continued the vicious attack.
β
The gang eventually left after robbing the man of a games console and accessories and two mobile telephones.
Gemmell and Wilson were also convicted of breaking into a home in Boddam on the same day and attacking another victim with knives and making off with a bankcard, mobile telephone and an air rifle.
The trio were locked up for a total of 27 years - Gemmell was sentenced to 10 years, Douglas to 10 years and Wilson sentenced to seven years.
