New designs have been revealed for the apartments plan for the old Debenham's store in Nuneaton town centre. Planning permission was given the go-ahead in July 2023 to convert the old department store into apartments with small commercial units suitable for business start-ups and independent retailers.
The prominent building has stood empty ever since the devastating news broke that the business in Bridge Street was due to close. Generations in Nuneaton mourned the loss of the Debenhams store, which took over from what was then the J.C Smiths building in 1972.
But part of it is now set to become places where people live with 63 apartments set to be created. This includes demolishing some parts of the old building although the famed frontage on Newdegate Street is set to remain.

But before any works can start, conditions that were put in place when planning permission was granted have to be lifted by the council. A new application has been submitted to lift some of these.
This includes details of planting to provide additional foraging areas for bat, details and position of roosting and nesting areas, a timetable for the implementation of all the ecological and landscape mitigation and enhancement measures. Also plans that outline securing future maintenance and retention.

The application is now being considered by planning officers at the Town Hall. A full list of all of the proposals can be found on the council's website by searching in the planning applications section for reference 041445.
The target decision date is February 14.
