Demolition work is ongoing at the former Kingsholme pub

A ghost sign has emerged at a old Nuneaton town centre pub. The sign on side of the old Kingsholme pub provides a link to its historic past.

Prior to being the Kingsholme, for many years it was the Coach and Horses pub. The historic coaching inn is said to have been in operation since the early 1800s.

It then closed in the mid 90s before re-opening as The Kingsholme. This pub served pints for just under a decade before closing its doors.

Now a ghost sign for the Coach and Horses pub has appeared as the old Kingsholme sign has been removed from the side of the building, which faces onto Abbey Street, towards the flats.

The glimpse into the past comes as demolition has started at the site, which has stood empty for more than 20 years. On Monday (January 13), passers-by clocked that parts of the old pub were being pulled down.

CoventryLive has seen that the works are ongoing today (January 15) and the main building still stands, all of the outbuildings have been torn down and the land is being levelled.

Its owners were given permission to demolish the building back in 2023 but there has been no action taken until earlier this week.

The movement comes after an official warning was issued by the police due to the derelict pub becoming a 'magnet for anti-social behaviour, drug taking, trespass, and even arson attacks' Officers served the owners with a Community Protection Notice (CPN) to ensure that the site remained secure.

Speculation on social media that the prominent building is listed is unfounded. Opposite the road, the old Ritz building has Grade II listed status inside.
