Officers managed to locate him shortly after, but refusing to go quietly, the 36-year-old tried fleeing in the stolen car - running over an officer's foot and injuring a second in the process.

A video shared by the force, included above, shows both this, and the moment Hannefin got his comeuppance when he was arrested shortly after.

A spokesman for Coventry Police said: "Hannefin, 36, was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, theft from a shop, two assaults on police officers, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.

"Appearing before magistrates on 6 January, he pleaded guilty and was jailed for 16 weeks. Car thieves are often on the lookout on cold days for cars being left running on driveways."

Regarding the circumstances that led to the theft, the spokesman warned: "Remember to always remain with your vehicle and never to leave it unlocked while you aren't nearby."
