As many as 100 trees were blown down at a golf club in Cornwall due to severe winds in Storm Goretti.
β
Truro Golf Club estimated that between 75 to 100 trees were blown down or damaged during the storm on Thursday (January 8), which triggered a rare red weather warning in the county.
β
As a result of the damage, the club was closed all weekend and remains so until further notice whilst the team continues to evaluate and formulate a schedule to fix the damage.
β
In a statement shared on Friday following the storm, a spokesperson for the club said: "Thank you to all for offers of help and all the supportive messages we have had through a slightly shocking day.
"The course will remain closed all weekend and until further notice whilst we continue to evaluate and formulate our schedule to fix all the damage.
"Rest assured we have a plan coming together to get a decent loop of holes open as soon as practical."
β
The club estimated at that time that "75-100 trees are obviously down or damaged with a further assessment needed for standing hidden damage", describing it as a "sad morning".
In an update provided on social media today (Monday, January 12), Truro Golf Club said it is aiming to start removing some of the fallen trees, if the weather allows, tomorrow (Tuesday).
It added that a volunteer crew will also start clearing any debris from the fairways.
β
A spokesperson for the club wrote: "We aim to make a start on some of the tree work weather depending on Tuesday. If itβs not too wet to work on we will be beginning to remove the tree that has fallen onto the 16th green so we can see the damage underneath.
"It might be too wet however underfoot and unfortunately as itβs one of our wetter holes material wonβt be able to be taken away. We will be cutting and stacking nearby for when ground conditions allow.
"In addition the volunteer crew will be in and making a start on clearing the small debris from some of the fairways, our thanks as always, their help will be more invaluable than ever.
"Alongside all the above if it has magically stayed dry then we might squeeze in a hand cut of the greens and we need to finish off digging out the stumps of the carpark hedge, just a small section still to go. Plenty to do."
