Scott Twine has set out his personal aspirations for the new Championship season following his opening day brace against Sheffield United, admitting that he wants to “kick on” in front of goal after a mixed first full campaign in Bristol City colours.
The 26-year-old scored twice as Gerhard Struber’s side kicked off the new term with a 4-1 win over the Blades on Saturday evening. Twine gave the Reds the lead after just five minutes when he curled home a superb free-kick from the edge of the penalty area, before Tyrese Campbell drew United level nine minutes later.
While it was Ruben Selles’ side who then piled on the pressure, it was the Robins who headed into the break with the advantage when Ross McCrorie smashed home following a swift counter-attack. Anis Mehmeti then further extended the lead as he turned home Emil Riis’ cross just seconds after the restart before Twine wrapped up the three points when his right-footed shot found the net, with the aid of a deflection off of Tyler Bindon
Few had backed City to come out on top against United, who most are expecting to challenge for automatic promotion again this term. Although they rode their luck at times, Struber’s side were worthy winners and now sit top of the Championship after the first round of fixtures.
“I think the game couldn’t have gone much better for us,” the 26-year-old told the Robins’ media team post-match. “It’s something we’ve worked for, for seven or eight weeks now in pre-season, so to get that win on the first day of the season against a good team, we couldn’t be happier.
“We’ve had some new ideas in pre-season, and a lot of that was shown today,” he continued. “We’re obviously really happy and the game couldn’t have gone much better for us, so we’ll keep improving, keep working hard, and see where it takes us.
“We’ve obviously proven last year that we can win a game in many ways, and today we had to sort of sit in a block and wait for our chances, but I thought we did that really well. I’m sure every game won’t look like that, but we’re really pleased with how we did.
“We know we’re a hard team to beat when we do the basics well, and I thought we did them really well today.”
Having spent the second half of the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Ashton Gate from Burnley, Twine made his move to the West Country permanent in the final weeks of last summer’s transfer window. The timing of of the transfer meant that the attacking midfielder missed the entirety of the Robins' pre-season, but he hit the ground running back in BS3 when he scored the late winner off the bench in City’s 4-3 win over Millwall, just a day after his return was confirmed.
Though he scored five more goals in all competitions last term, all of which came in a run of 11 games between November and January, it felt to many fans that Twine still had another level to reach.
Now, with a full pre-season under his belt and underlying injury issues that caused problems in the final months of last season put to bed, the ex-MK Dons man is looking to use his opening day display as a springboard for the remainder of the campaign. That starts in the Carabao Cup against his former club on Tuesday evening at Ashton Gate.
“It’s something I really want to do more of this year,” Twine explained. “Score more goals and get more assists.
“To do that on the first day is really pleasing, but obviously, I want to carry that on now and really kick on.
“We obviously want to win every game we play,” he continued when asked about the meeting with MK Dons. “That’s our aim. We go into every game looking to win, so we’ll do our best on Tuesday and hopefully get a win there.”
