Bristol City head coach Gerhard Struber has insisted that the Robins still have plenty to improve on while also seeing things he liked in their 1-0 friendly win over Newport County on Tuesday afternoon.

The Robins continued their preparations for the upcoming Championship season with a victory over League Two side Newport at the HPC as Elijah Morrison scored with one of the final kicks of the contest.

It had been a game of limited opportunites for the hosts, especially in the first half, before City dominated possession in the second period.

Struber began work at City earlier this month after being appointed as Liam Manning's replacement and has so far overseen work on the training pitch both in Bristol and out in Portugal as well as friendly exercises against a local Portuguese second division team and Premier League outfit AFC Bournemouth.

Reflecting on Tuesday afternoon's game, Struber told Bristol Live: "I think we stayed in the beginning of our process to create a little bit of a different style to the last season and in this process we are [in] we can see many things where we can improve, where we can do it better, but I think the pre-season is the right time for that.

"Games are the real truth and the games tell us where we are at the moment, and in this direction I would say we saw domination in the second half.

"In the end, we have to adapt to be more flexible in our position when we are in possession and I think in this direction, we saw today how important it is to have the right discipline, to be in the right position.

"I think also it's the major thing to drive a low block down and in this direction I would say we could make more stress on the last line with different movements behind, with also some different decisions.

"At the same time, I see many good gegenpressing moments. I also see, especially in the last [minute], how we score in the last moment was something where we train in the same way. So many, many good things and many, many things where we have to improve."

After a quiet first half, City made nine changes at the break with Joe Lumley and Jason Knight the only players to remain on the pitch. Knight was then replaced by second-year scholar Louie Derrick after the hour mark while Lumley played the full 90 minutes.

The Robins will continue their preparations for the new season with back-to-back friendlies against League Two Cheltenham Town and League One Plymouth Argyle on Friday and Saturday respectively.

This will see two separate squads used, with Struber explaining: "Yes, I think we want to use the whole squad again and we want to bring more minutes on the field for every single player. So this means we have on two days different teams on the start and maybe also the Under-21s help us a little bit and cover the one or other player."
