Bristol City loan notebook: Ian Holloway's Jamie Knight-Lebel change, Adam Murphy facing England, Sam Bell in form | Bristol Live

Bristol Live rounds up some of the key talking points surrounding the players currently on loan away from Bristol City this season

For Bristol City, these next two weeks or so represent a chance to rest, recharge, and re-energise ahead of a busy run of matches leading up to the festive period. For clubs below the Championship, however, it is a case of business as usual.

Barring a handful of cancelled matches in League One and League Two because of international call-ups, the majority of teams in the third and fourth tiers of the footballing pyramid will be involved in competitive action this weekend.

As a result, most of the players who left Ashton Gate on loan in the summer transfer window will be in contention to feature for their club sides over the coming days.

On the whole, movement out of south Bristol this summer was limited. Still, a fair few young prospects departed the West Country on a temporary basis, with Jamie Knight-Lebel and Adam Murphy heading to Swindon Town, Sam Bell linking up with Wycombe Wanderers and Luke Skinner continuing his development with Eastleigh.

With the November break now properly up and running and things therefore rather quiet in and around Ashton Gate, we've taken the chance to round up some of the current talking points surrounding those away from BS3 on loan...

Ian Holloway aids Jamie Knight-Lebel’s learning

Since making the deadline day loan move to Swindon Town from Bristol City, Jamie Knight-Lebel has been a reasonably regular fixture of Ian Holloway’s backline at the County Ground. More often than not, that has been as part of the Robins’ back three, typically as the right-sided or central member.

Against MK Dons in the Vertu Trophy on Tuesday evening, though, Holloway made the decision to start the 20-year-old in a more advanced position. Knight-Lebel dropped deep into a right-back’s spot out of possession, but pushed high into more of a wing-back role when Swindon had the ball, in a manner not dissimilar to that of Mark Sykes or Ross McCrorie at Ashton Gate.

Discussing that change of position with the Robins' media team after the full-time whistle, Holloway said, "Part of your learning is sticking you in different positions. I don’t think Jamie Knight-Lebel’s played there before.

"I wanted him to understand what that was, use his aerial prowess, and also lock down their fella. It all worked a treat really, and then at half-time, when he’s running over and getting a throw-in from the opposite side - which I told him to go and enjoy himself and do some things - brilliant.

"I want movement, I want people to interchange positions, so that’s a great night for Jamie."

Whether or not it is in Gerhard Struber's or the Robins' plans to play Knight-Lebel in such a position in the future is unclear, but the decision to send him on loan to Swindon was made with the aim of aiding his development. These experiences under Holloway's management should only benefit him and, in turn, City in the long run.

Bristol City loanee Adam Murphy set for international action

While Jamie Knight-Lebel has quickly been thrust straight into the action at Swindon Town, fellow Bristol City loanee Adam Murphy has had to wait a little bit longer to make an impact at the County Ground.

After two substitute appearances, the 20-year-old was handed his first league start in English football as the Robins beat Tranmere Rovers 2-1 last weekend, to keep the pace with early leaders Walsall at the top of League Two.

Murphy wasn’t involved in Swindon’s Vertu Trophy win over MK Dons on Tuesday evening and will miss their league meeting with Fleetwood Town this weekend, however, having once again been called up to the Ireland Under-21s squad for their November fixtures.

The Young Boys in Green continue their UEFA U21 European Championship qualifying campaign this month with matches against both England and Andorra. Jim Crawford’s side first travels to St Andrew’s, where they will face the Three Lions on Friday, November 14, before they make the trip to Andorra for the second game of the break on Tuesday, November 18.

Currently, Ireland sit third in qualifying Group D, having won two and drawn one of their first three matches. England are a point and a place ahead of the Boys in Green, having won all of their opening three games, whilst Slovakia top the group with 10 points from four matches. Andorra sit at the bottom of the group with just three points from six outings.

Sam Bell and Luke Skinner, men in form away from Bristol City

The third and final player to depart Bristol City, on loan, on transfer deadline day, Sam Bell continued his impressive start to life at Wycombe Wanderers as the Chairboys ran out 4-1 winners over Leyton Orient on Saturday afternoon.

Bell scored the fourth goal of his loan spell and Wycombe's fourth of the afternoon against Richie Wellens' side at Adams Park. The 23-year-old, who was stationed on the left flank, pounced on a loose ball inside the penalty area to tap into an empty net after Donnell McNeilly had seen his right-footed shot saved.

After a poor start to the season, the Chairboys now find themselves 14th in League One, just six points adrift of the play-off places, having gone unbeaten over the course of their last nine matches.

Away from Adams Park, young City prospect Luke Skinner also continued his positive spell away from Ashton Gate as he scored twice for Eastleigh in their 4-2 defeat to York City. The teenager is playing for the Spitfires in the National League after starting the season well with Weston-super-Mare.
