A large fire broke out at a recycling centre

A teenager was hit by a fire engine which was responding to a fire at Avonmouth yesterday (Friday, April 4).

The incident happened in Lawrence Weston while the fire engine was on its way to a recycling centre at Poplar Way East, Avonmouth.

The vehicle was using lights and sirens when it hit the pedestrian, who was taken to hospital.

Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening or life changing.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: "Officers were called just before 5pm yesterday (Friday, April 4) to Lawrence Weston, Bristol, following a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.

"The vehicle, a fire engine, was responding to the fire in Avonmouth using lights and sirens when it was involved in the collision with a teenager.

"The pedestrian has been taken to hospital, their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening or life changing.

"Enquiries are ongoing. If you were in the area and witnessed the collision, or have any relevant footage, please call 101 and quote reference 5225096734."

The large fire in Avonmouth was attended by crews from a dozen stations.

Avon Fire and Rescue said: "We were called at 4.27pm yesterday to a large fire at recycling centre at Poplar Way East, Avonmouth.

"Crews from Avonmouth, Temple, Yate, Portishead, Kingswood, Pill, Bedminster, Clevedon, Thornbury, Bath, Weston and Nailsea were in attendance.

"Incident involved multiple materials including cardboard, household and garden waste measuring 100m by 50m.

"Eighteen firefighters in breathing apparatus tackled the fire using ten high pressure hose reels and two 45mm jets to extinguish the fire.

"The fire was tackled from the ground and from the turntable ladder.

"The fire is now believed to be extinguished with crews on site to manage hot spots."
