Smart meter customers have been unable to track usage on the app or website for MONTHS now. Mr Lewis is urging people to take the matter into their own hands, and conduct checks manually.

After the Ofgem energy cap increase, the MoneySavingExpert has been open and honest about the struggles facing many Brits. Last week, the consumer champion warned Brits that "civil unrest" is not far away.

Anybody affected by the British Gas outage should take regular readings. MSE says, this way, you are up-to-date with your most accurate information on your energy usage.

You won't get overcharged for what you haven't used, Mr Lewis added. A British Gas spokesperson said: "We’re working to sort this issue and we know that keeping track of energy usage is really important to our customers right now.

"They can still log into the app as normal but the glitch is preventing them from seeing their most up to date usage information. We hope to have this fixed soon. This doesn’t affect bills in any way or how consumption is being recorded."

Mr Lewis is an ITV regular, with his own show the Martin Lewis Money Show, and regular stints on the likes of Lorraine, Good Morning Britain and This Morning.
